20 things I know now that I wish I knew 10 years ago

• Life is linear, but time isn’t; it moves in cycles.  Talk and listen to your elders.  They may not be up on the latest technological fads, but they know things that add the kind of value to your life that you can’t box or buy. 
• If you hate your life, wallowing in despair while doing nothing about it is completely futile.  You are responsible for your own happiness.  And it is a choice.
• In order to lose weight, you have to work out and eat moderate and balanced meals.  Period.  This is the gist of every single ‘new’ diet fad; they just focus on one particular aspect of something else: oils, protein, carbs.  Just be smart and refrain from indulgence on a regular basis. 
• Living bodies die faster on diets mostly composing of dead foods.  This ‘death’ evidences itself by dis-ease, and disease.  Your body’s cleansing process evidences itself by what Western medicine frequently calls illness.  Symptoms are your body’s way of telling you that something isn’t right.  Symptoms are not problems in and of themselves.  Search for the source; don’t just stop at eliminating the message. 
• Twinkies never go bad.  They have an almost indefinite shelf life.  Why would you want to eat something like that?
• You have power in and influence over your life; don’t just roll over and take it.
• Everything is so dramatic in elementary school to high school because there’s but a vague awareness of how little your life is in the grand scheme of things.  Don’t use that fact to fritter your life away, but simply to understand relativity.  Your crush doesn’t like you.  So what?  You’ll live.  Really.  There are kids dodging bullets near their homes.  Put it in perspective.
• Don’t compromise yourself to make someone like you.  If you have to front or compromise yourself to be friends, you’re not friends, and ultimately, you’re playing yourself.  If you play yourself, you give others permission to play you.  Don’t play yourself.
• People can only tell you things from their perspective.  Take everything with a grain of salt and consider your source.  Don’t take financial advice from broke people, relationship advice from perpetually relationship-challenged people, or copy homework from people with D’s.
• Pay attention to what you think, say, and do for all magnificently work together to create your existence and add to the collective conscious.
• Societies believe things based on the best of their abilities and willingness to understand them at the time to the degree in which it serves those in power.
• Anyone who makes you hate yourself cannot possibly love you.  Examples of self-hate: wanting a different race, complexion, physical features, body type, hair type, etc.  It is possible to seek to improve what you have without hating what you have.  I love my body, I’d just like to firm up.  Nothing wrong with that.  If, however, I starved myself to fit into a size 0, you could reasonably classify that as a form of self-hatred.  Be scrupulous in your search for self-hatred because it’s everywhere and so commonplace that it’s often unidentified and mislabeled. 
• Nobody knows how long it takes for plastic to biodegrade, so how can it possibly be good for the environment?  And if it’s not good for the environment, how can it possibly be good for us????
• Say no to drugs!  This includes prescription “medicine“.
• Love is a verb!  You enact it upon others and others enact it upon you.  If it remains a simple feeling, it’s just fondness.
• There are two energies: love and fear.  Everything else is a derivative of the two.  Go towards the love and away from the fear. 
• Teach yourself what you want to learn.  Be in control of your own education.  Ask questions and definitely question everything…even if it gets you into trouble.
• Surround yourself with like-minded people and energy like that of which you’d like to manifest.
• Teach yourself how to live on a budget early.  You always live by a budget.  Some do it more successfully than others and that comes from practice.
• Parents are just people with kids.  They’re not superhuman, omniscient, omnipotent or infallible.  They just have kids.
