What My World Sounds Like: Sia

Sia “Some People Have Real Problems”

Some people do have real problems.  One of my not-so-real, but very real problems is that the music industry is oversaturated with crappy artists.  Fortunately for me, the heavens opened and re-graced me with an album by an artist I discovered seven years ago.  Sia Furler simply goes by Sia now.  I dig it; I welcome change.  Apparently, so does Sia whose artistry and sound over the years has grown immensely.  I embraced her first album, Healing is Difficult, because it was an introduction to a different sound for me.  There was an amalgamation of different sounds on the album, but overall, I recall the electronic beats and interesting topics.  The song that had the most startling impact on me, however, was “Blow It All Away.”  The strings, the haunting vocals in the background, the lyrics, the drums, the melodies…such a perfect song.

If the measure of a year was by its music, I can say that 2008 is off to an excellent start with the release of Some People Have Real Problems.  Not fitting the mold is something Sia’s always done without much of an effort.  What she’s managed to capture with this latest offering is a collection of songs just as musical as “Blow It Away” and “Breathe Me” throught the entire album without making it entirely depressing.  I’m loving it!

Unfortunately, she was just out my way at the beginning of November without my knowledge, so I’ll have to wait until March to check out her New York show.  To find out more about Sia and her tour dates, go to siamusic.net.

Come along, it is the break of day
Surely now, you’ll have some things to say
It’s not the time for telling tales on me
So come along, it wont be long ’til we return happy
Shut your eyes, there are no lies in this world we call sleep
Let’s desert this day of hurt, tomorrow we’ll be free
Let’s not fight, I’m tired can’t we just sleep tonight
Don’t turn away, it’s just there’s nothing left here to say
Turn around, I know we’re lost but soon we’ll be found
Well it’s been rough but we’ll be just fine
Work it out yeah we’ll survive
You mustn’t let a few bad times dictate
So come along, it wont be long ‘yil we return happy
Shut your eyes, there are no lies in this world we call sleep
Let’s desert this day of hurt, tomorrow we’ll be free
Let’s not fight, I’m tired can’t we just sleep tonight
Don’t turn away, it’s just there’s nothing left here to say
Turn around, I know we’re lost but soon we’ll be found

I LOVE the new Sia album!! And I love the cover! Thanks for the link to your “other” site (from MySpace). I’m including my other blog–mostly replicated from MySpace blogs (or vice versa) but I also have another blog that houses my student zine pages (www.3wavezines.blogspot.com) and another database for gender-focused multimedia, that is in development (www.3wavefeminisms.blogspot.com).

    xoxo
