what, that was the wackest commercial i ever did see, it made no sense at all
wait wait wait…is that a commercial for India??? Did they go out and find the WHITEST Indians to do an ad for “White Beauty”???? fuck.outta.here. I’m thru.
Admittedly, I have a unique ability to understand what perplexes most; but oh my! This is one of those instances where marketing needed to get something out and there wasn’t anyone at the table who could trust their own instincts and ask a vital question, such as ‘what is this SUPPOSED to be?’ or it once again proves that most major companies play on the complacency or simplistic mindsets of the people. As a writer, there was a story line, but all elements that we see are not necessary; for instance, what does ponds, no matter what version, have to do with a person obviously being given a symbol of committment, only to find out that someone you know takes great pleasure in showing you he has been married, and you see him walking down the street, quite happy with his new wife while you are still wearing the sign of commitment around your neck? OK, this is where I get off.
That commercial was horrible… “White Beauty,” This commercial was the only way to advertise this product, I think not… Somebody should lose their job for this one…
Chris, I concur. When I first saw it, I was really upset and wanted to write the company a letter. I should move forward with that plan.
Someone mentioned that this was an Indian ad — in which case I wouldn’t be surprised. In most countries I’ve been to, there are still products on the market for lightening one’s complexion. It’s just that in America we take the free solution — staying out of the sun …
The good, as I see it, is that I knew–and most everyone I show this clip to knows–that you SHOULD be offended! That wasn’t the case once upon a time.
Love yourself without modification.
From 20 things I wish I knew 10 years ago…
Anyone who makes you hate yourself cannot possibly love you. Examples of self-hate: wanting a different race, complexion, physical features, body type, hair type, etc. It is possible to seek to improve what you have without hating what you have. I love my body, I’d just like to firm up. Nothing wrong with that. If, however, I starved myself to fit into a size 0, you could reasonably classify that as a form of self-hatred. Be scrupulous in your search for self-hatred because it’s everywhere and so commonplace that it’s often unidentified and mislabeled.
Don’t compromise yourself to make someone like you. If you have to front or compromise yourself to be friends, you’re not friends, and ultimately, you’re playing yourself. If you play yourself, you give others permission to play you. Don’t play yourself.
Exactly Leandra.
I wasn’t sure what was going on either until they slow motioned and stilled the women in juxtaposition. This only goes to show how anglo standards of beauty are something that many cultures grapple with, not just African Americans.
What’s crazy is she was a really light complected Indian woman already, and much more attractive than the fiancé in my opinion. But white made all the difference I guess. This is some ol bull
The lasting effects of colonialism. Whitening creams… they are on the shelves of every farmacia en la Republica Dominicana, every beauty store in Tokyo, and even in the flea markets of Egypt. While we’re on the topic, let’s talk about the fact that eyelid surgery is the most popular plastic surgery procedure in the world (to make asian eyes look more caucasian)…or let’s talk about the popularity of the naturally unattainable media standard of beauty in the form of “browned” skin, blonde hair, light eyes, and a curvy but diminutive frame. Seriously people. Stop breeding. Start teaching.
