Good news: Sudan’s president charged with genocide in Darfur

Finally, some sort of accountability. Despite the ten charges Al-Bashir faces, judges will take several months reviewing the evidence before deciding whether or not to order for his arrest. On top of that, Al-Bashir doesn’t recognize the legitimacy of the International Crimes Court. Wonderful.

So…when is it Bush’s turn?

I know I’m late, but…hmmm

saint_barack10.jpgNot paying much attention to the news usually means missing out on some key national events or at least their details.

Earlier this month, Obama got a lot of heat on his “flip flop.” I’m just now getting hip to what that flip flop was and what it means. After promising to oppose the Protect America Act, Obama’s recent vote helped get the bill passed.

He offered a flimsy explanation on his blog. Some believe that this single issue shouldn’t cause voters to abandon their allegiance to the Democratic candidate. This isn’t just a single issue.

To learn more about the latest version of this Act, watch the video and download the text below:

Watch: The End of Suburbia

Rising energy costs are on everyone’s mind.  There’s no way to escape the concern, even if you don’t drive because everyone’s feeling the pinch as the rising transport and production costs are being passed on to consumers.  We have to pay to check bags on flights now.  The price of food has experienced astronomical increases with regard to their prices just a few months ago.  Electricity, gas…everything’s going up while the value of the dollar and the availability of jobs continues to decline.

Those experiencing it the worst are the same people who, at some point, were actually saving money.  I’m talking about suburbanites.  Suburban existence is completely dependent upon car transport and the availability of cheap fuels.  Well say it ain’t so, but yeah…peak issue is a very real concern no longer relegated exclusively to energy industry.  Peak oil doesn’t mean that there isn’t anymore oil, but that we’ve reached the maximum level of production, so from this point onward, every barrel of oil will be harder to get out of the ground, of lesser quality, and more expensive.  The days of cheap energy are over.

A while ago, there was an explosion of SUVs on the market.  Little men wanted them to feel more manly.  Big men wanted them for more space…and to feel more manly.  And little women wanted them to feel more manly.  (Strange, yes?)  Then hits rising energy costs and SUVs are no longer regarded as cool, but stupid if the space was unused and unnecessary.  If you didn’t sell/trade-in your SUV when they were still “in”, the likelihood of selling/trading-in now is low.  If you live in the suburbs and drive a SUV, effectively your little toe bleeds as the gun falls out of your hand.

We’re going to see a continuing rise in urban populations and the development of more urban spheres.  Local living is key.  Moving forward, living, buying, working, and eating locally are all going to be of increased importance, something most suburbanites just can’t do without automobile reliance.  According to James Howard Kunstler, “The Wal-Marts of North America have very efficiently and effectively destroyed almost every local and regional network of economic, commercial interdepence.  And those networks are going to have to be rebulit.”

I found a great 52-minute documentary about this called The End of Suburbia.  Watch it below.

Tonight: Do the world a favor

sundance-channel-thegreen.jpg

My last trip to New York provided me with the opportunity to see a film I’ve been interested in seeing for over four months and the opportunity to speak with the subject of the film, biotect Michael Reynolds.  On Tuesday, April 1st at 9 pm est/pst, the Sundance Channel will begin its second season of The Green premiering that film, The Garbage Warrior, which introduces viewers to Reynolds and his brilliant homes, earthships.

Before watching Garbage Warrior, I was already enthralled with the idea of earthships.  I was certain that I wanted one and became an informal spokesperson for these houses, which are completely self-sustaining.  They produce their own electricity, their own heat, contain and treat both water and sewage, and render the perfect atmosphere for food production.  They’ll survive 30-below-zero winters, earthquakes, and hurricanes.  Seriously, they’re wonderful and necessary.  The film traces Reynold’s journey to getting the Sustainable Development Testing Site Act passed in New Mexico which allows for the testing of sustainable homebuilding technologies.

After seeing this film, more than ever, I know that I need to get a piece of land and build one of these homes.  I urge you to watch this film, screening on Sundance tonight at 9:40 pm e/p; Friday, April 4th at 10:40 am e/p; and Sunday, April 6th at 3:40 pm e/p.  Garbage Warrior is also available for viewing OnDemand on the Sundance Channel.

Smart people

I dig ‘em.  Keith Olbermann was never on my radar (because I don’t watch TV and generally dismiss public political commentary), but made a very detailed statement that had me nodding my head in agreeance quite a few times.  I can’t speak to Olbermann’s holistic reputation or perspective, but I do appreciate his critique of the Clinton campaign strategy.
