StoryOfStuff.com

I couldn’t find a version as clear as the one on the site, so please go to storyofstuff.com to watch the entire film. It’s only 20 minutes and very much worth your time. If you haven’t the time to watch it all in one sitting, you can watch the parts on YouTube and/or Google Video. It’s so worth it!

 Learning Meditation

The benefits of meditation are marvelous.  I haven’t been able to institute a regular practice, but I’m getting there.  For some, it’s so elusive.  Learning Meditation helps to make it a little more understandable.

When I was meditating, I was much more calm and focused.  Life was less elusive.  If you’d like to partake in the benefits, learn more at Learning Meditation.

If you want to meditate the lazy way, try Hololsync.

Free Rice!

New site, FreeRice.com, gives away ten grains of rice for each vocabulary word that you get right.  But you don’t personally receive the rice.  The advertisers will donate the rice to the United Nations to “assist” in ending hunger.  While on one hand, I think it’s a cool idea, on the other, it just pisses me off.  I was on the site for a good twenty or so minutes getting up to the highest vocab level–50–with the help of Dictionary.com.  At the end of it, I’ve donated 750 grains of rice.  I would’ve continued to 1,000, but I got bored.  How much does 1,000 grains of rice cost?  NOTHING!  The advertisers I remember seeing were ReadersDigest.com, Liz Claiborne, Mac.com, and Radisson Hotels.  Multi-million dollar corporations (on the low end) paying pennies to advertise on a campaign to “end hunger.”  Why the cynical quotation marks?  Because ending hunger is easy, but it doesn’t benefit ruling parties so it won’t happen.

It’s a kind of cool idea, though–getting people to participate in something slightly charitable (at least on the surface) while increasing their vocabularies.

The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation is one cool organization. For the last 12 years, its been inspring people to practice kindness and “pass it on” to others. It’s a great resource for all sorts of different groups of people: schools and teachers, faith-based organizations, community members, service groups, companies, etc. The website offers a variety of resources for free, including a project planning guide, lesson plans, project plans, activity ideas and more.

As Stevie proclaimed in 1976, love’s in need of love today. Do kindness. Pass it on.

If we weren’t here…

worldwithoutus-logo.jpg

A few weeks ago, I heard that if all the insects in the world died, all of life would end. And if all the humans in the world died, all of life would flourish.

By happenstance, I found this website today called The World Without Us that illustrates what would happen if humans just suddenly disappeared from life. The World Without Us is the companion site to the book of the same title by Alan Weisman. The author invites readers to envision Earth without humans in consideration of humanity’s negative impact. The opposite of development is nature. The opposite of our current model of development is nature. Now is our chance to demonstrate just how progressive we are by truly integrating technology and nature. Is destruction necessarily our nature or do we use it as the scapegoat for our laziness and greed?
