What My World's Like

love is the answer.

Today, I learned that a friend I made during my time in Haiti, Jeffrey Brown, passed away recently. He was pure sunshine and love. Peaceful, patient, warm, and bright. His heart was infinite. He was a retiree from Austin and all he did was find different ways to spend the remainder of his life being of service and spreading love.

In our last correspondence, he wrote the following:

“Love is the answer, no? The journey gives us so many opportunities to love each other, and as many challenges to test our understanding of that truth. I struggle often to stay focused on how patience, understanding, and peaceful, ‘gentle’ loving is always the most profound and effective way to connect and be with our brothers and sisters. When the love connection occurs, it’s the best thing in the world.”

Today, I’m saddened because we lost a really good person, an active contributor to improving the conditions of this world. However, I’m also inspired to love deeper, wider, further, freer, and bolder. Love is not a finite resource; it has no end. Should we ever find we might have emptied our well, all we need to do is dig deeper.

Thank you to my friend for leaving a legacy of love for those of us you touched. We appreciate you.

thich nhat hanh on living mindfully.

i first read thich nhat hanh almost a decade ago in college. to me, then and now, he’s fly. eternally wise with a bright spirit. watch.

happiness is a living thing and we need to feed our happiness in order for our happiness to last.
it’s like love. if you don’t feed your love, it will die.
and the practice of mindfulness is to practice understanding and compassion.
and that is the foundation of happiness.

“we love fear”

Dec

written by erykah badu

Some day I will be free of this pain. The agony of fear. I am ashamed. It is who we have become. It has given us identity. We have inherited this thing.
It lives deep within us and is there to cradle our heads like a womb we know well. It is our familiar. The pain it brings with it has become a sweet unhappiness. We have become addicted to its ways .
It brings us to our VICES that keep us in complacency. It has defined who we are when our wills retreat . It has no mercy on the weak. It has introduced us to jealousy and hatred and self loathing and greed and prejudice and racism and hate and shame. It makes us old and ugly .
It covers our heads with bags and ties our hands and brings us to our knees.
It tells lies in a truth disguise.
We FEAR.
It has taken our Power.
It has chained a Champion..
Love has been forgotten.
We have become comfortably numb.
Even our worship of “GOD “has become an act to satisfy one another.
We hate together.

But there is A FORCE.
The GREATEST OF ALL.
That which turns KINGS TO SERVANTS and changes the face of time with nothing but a choice .
It belongs to you.
It wears a simple smile.
The choice to love.
Love has the face of joy, a happy child, a giving hand.
It is made of acceptance and encouragement and sharing and compassion And forgiveness.
It Does NOT JUDGE the weak nor the poor or those who are different. It does not hurt or embarrass.

We have lived . We have adapted to fear . We have forgotten.
We are innocent.
We are Good.

Because the two ( fear and love) can not occupy the same space at once, only one of the two can be applied in a single CHOICE.
It is ours. It is a journey we walk alone.
We are accountable.

Fear will not give in to easy tho.
It wants to blame others when WE Choose NOT to love.
It is a self ran program that has fooled us into believing we Need it to be identified as one of the ” many”.

But only the few know this:

FEAR FEARS YOUR LOVE.
It will die without your energy.
It holds tight like good loving fleeting in the night .

We must Fight.
And Never Give Up.
Free me.
Free me.
Free me.

bruce lee wisdom.

the cadence of bruce lee’s speech makes it so that i can listen to him talk all day. in addition to that, he’s got gems to share.

“my life it seems like is a life of self-examination and self-peeling of my self, bit by bit, day by day….”

“when i look around, i always learn something and that is to be always yourself, and to express yourself, to have faith in yourself.
do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it.”

“empty your mind. be formless. shapeless. like water. now, you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup.
you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle.
you put it in a tea pot, it becomes the tea pot.
now water can flow, or it can crash. be water, my friend.”

“running water never grows stale, so you’ve got to keep on flowing.”

Jouelzy from Black Hair Kitchen told me I would love Shameless Maya and she was all kinds of right. When I saw her Draw My Life video, I knew she was made to be my distant internet friend…one day.

Her story touches me deeply. There are some profound lessons in it, so I wanted to share.

I know I’ve been MIA. There are reasons. They will come, soon. Along with all the support and urging from my friends– especially Jouelzy — Maya’s inspired me in a few powerful ways, and I plan to get back on the wagon and be shameless. I’ve got a lot of work to do!

the revolutionary gardener.

Immediately upon viewing this, it was clear this would be one of my favorite TED Talks because it’s one of my favorite ideas: grow your own food!

“Growing your own food is like printing your own money.”
– Ron Finley

Mr. Finley is an urban gardener. A renegade gardener with a message we all need to hear. Our food system is a disaster and intricately tied to the medical system. Food can be medicine or poison. Your diet determines whether health or disease awaits you. One of the best way to choose health is to grow your own food.

The right to grow movement requires and deserves our attention and energy. One of my most sincere beliefs is that we will return to being stewards of the land, by choice or necessity. The earlier you choose, the better off you’ll be.

PE isn't important? Physical inactivity costs 2 times the federal budget for the Dept. of Education

This generation of children growing up today are expected to die five years younger than their parents. Why? Because of inactivity. The benefits of exercise are so many that it seems silly not to. Yet, so many of us still don’t. I haven’t been to the gym since October.

Don’t judge me.

Still, movement is fundamental. An organization called Designed To Move has created “a physical action agenda”. Check it out here. We have to model healthy behavior for the youngsters to pick it up.

While I’ve fallen off my beloved fitness game for a while, I’m committed to getting back on track, not just for myself but because I want to be in the population of people that’s a part of the solution. Growing up, my mother used to say, “if you aren’t a part of the solution, you’re a part of the problem.” It annoyed me when she said it then, but it’s true.

The children are the future. Let’s teach them well.
