reconsidering opposition

Wolverine’s victory has to be pretty sweet.

Dating a comics illustrator hipped me to a few things. Something I heard several times that’s been having a recent impact in my life is that a hero is only as good as its villain. If the villain is cheesy and weak, accordingly, so is the hero. You wouldn’t consider Shaquille O’Neil to be particularly heroic or strong if he was up against a 150 pound guy and won. There’s an obvious and overwhelming disparity in size and strength. Flip the scenario around suddenly the situation changes.

Sometimes, the idea of opposition and competition is one that frightens us, causing us to choose “safer” plans. This method doesn’t allow us to experience our greatness, or even allow us to fail enough to succeed. In every perceived failure is at least one lesson that informs us of what we can improve upon. The greater the opposition, the greater the triumph. It means something to be No. 1 amongst strong competition.

The next time you consider shrinking into yourself at the thought of competing, think about how great the win will feel. If you happen to lose, take note of what you need to work on, and go at it again.

Challenge yourself.

the quest for greener pastures is often unfortunate and eternal. if you water your own grass,
you might find that you already have the makings of what you’ve been wanting.

the creation of what we desire is infinitely more rewarding than the mere discovery.

life’s lessons

  • Be an active student of your self and your life.
Who are you? How are you…? Why are you…?
Life is a mirror and we are constantly being revealed to ourselves. Are we paying attention? Taking time to get quiet and distill my own energy from everyone else’s is a vital part of this process.
  • Love is freedom, not possession.
Love the being of a person, not the having of a person. Possession is an ever-enduring illusion.
  • Choose your response.
We are free to choose how we are going to behave and what energy we are going to bring in every moment. As much as possible, I want to choose my response deliberately. Knee-jerk reactions are an unskillful way to maneuver through life. I want to be who I want to be independent of how/who others choose to be. My mantra is “amidst it all, be love.”
  • Thank your way through it.
There’s value even in the valley.  Everything isn’t what it seems. When we look back on our lives later, even if it doesn’t seem so now, we’ll find this amazing architecture we could’ve never dreamed of. The key, I’m learning, is to be grateful for it all. Create the meaning along the way.
  • Kindness begets kindness.
Karma is real. Keep doing you and watch the return. I dropped $4 during a trip to the store. All I had on me was that $4 specifically to purchase some food for work. It fell out of my pocket and someone stopped me to return it. Small, yes, but still huge. 🙂 As Will Smith said, “Throughout life people will make you mad, disrespect you and treat you bad. Let God deal with the things they do, cause hate in your heart will consume you too.”
  • You are a gift.
You are here on purpose. Your love is a gift. Your forgiveness is a gift. Even your gifts are your gifts.

What are you learning? If you’re on Twitter use the #whatmyworldslike hashtag and let’s start talking!

“love is so important”: a dialogue on love.

Feb
01

Sunday night, I posted four words on my Facebook page: “love is so important.” Doing so resulted in a very interesting, enlightening, and inspiring dialogue. I’m still meditating on the truths revealed in this conversation and hope they are of some value to you.
——

love is so important.

Sonny: NO SHIT! It’s crazy cause sometimes [it’s] hard to come by. Real Love anyways! and People abuse [it] like its in abundance. only thing in abundance in this world these days is corruption.

Kalifa: You can do anything with Love, but nothing can be accomplished without it.

Leandra: nothing but destruction. @sonny corrupted love is in abundance. i think love is everywhere, but it’s hard to see it behind all the lenses and filters…

Sonny: yes I agree. People don’t want to be loved they want to be secure in the falsehood of 401k’s, spring trips to Turks, A lease on a Lexus, a marriage based on business, Love falls far behind this other priorities. people have a tuff time accepting love and honest. Like Jack Nicholas said “you can’t handle the Truth”.

Leandra: “you can’t handle the truth.” word. most times, no.

“people don’t want to be loved…” i disagree. i think they do. i think they do desperately, but they don’t know how to be loved. and they don’t know how to love. they don’t know how to love and accept themselves so extending it to others is impossible. this is my daily task. for real. i wish it were the same for others.

all the superficial accouterments people seek to gain and glorify are simply temporary fillers for a deeper hole that can only be satisfied with something real, honest, and pure.

‘now’ is always the time to design and build your dreams.
that’s what makes the journey so sweet.

Right now is such an exciting time. Really, ‘now’ is the only time there ever is. Everything else is a construct, but ‘now’ will never cease to be. I’m moving confidently in the direction of my dreams. I’ve had some nudges along the way, but recently there’s been this sense of urgency. I can’t wait to make my dreams real. To manifest a grander version of myself. To live the life I want. No mas!

The point of power is always in the present. It’s in the now. Appreciate the journey by appreciating the present. The highs, lows, challenges, gains and losses are all a part of the bigger picture. To change your future, change your ‘now’. Do something differently. Move in the direction you want to be. This life is a process. There is no destination, only direction.

I’m writing and growing, being totally absorbed by the power, possibility, and responsibility of this moment, which is all about becoming the best version of myself possible. I’m on Cloud 9. You can be too. Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. 🙂

What’s your guiding question?

Oct
27

When creating a curriculum, the education field uses something called a guiding question. According to Educational Leadership, “A guiding question is the fundamental query that directs the search for understanding. Everything in the curriculum is studied for the purpose of answering it.”

In striving to be the best version of myself possible, I’ve decided on the following:

Am I living in love and light?

Asking myself this throughout the day should keep me focused on being who I want to be and not who I’ve reflexively been. It’s time for a change.

Do you have a guiding question? Do you think there’s value in creating one? If so, can you challenge yourself to create one? What’s yours?

Are you who you say you are? Are you who you think you are, or who you want to be? I often like to explore the concept and believe that I am, but in reality, I’m not. In me is the range of humanity—kind, selfish, strong, weak, committed, capricious, confident, insecure, humble, arrogant, beautiful and ugly. I’m extreme, contradictory, complex. Oftentimes, I think, too extreme, too contradictory, too complex. These layers have made it difficult for me to consistently see myself honestly and positively. There are so many contradictions that even I’m sometimes left wondering who am I?

On things that don’t necessarily matter, it’s easy for me to toss an opinion around, whether it’s requested or not. However, on issues that deeply affect me, usually silence is my standard. Makes no sense. Am I outspoken or reserved?

My journey has taught me that I’m nicest to those I don’t know and more hurtful to those I care the most about. Am I kind or am I mean?

I can speak about my life, who I am—or think I am—and what I’ve learned easiest with strangers than people I’m emotionally invested in.

Why does this incongruency exist? Will the awareness of its presence create more congruency or will it persist regardless?

‘Best Personal Blog’…?

Jun

This just in: Vernon from High Roadism nominated me for a Black Weblog Award in the ‘Best Personal Blog’ category. I’m thrilled, I’m honored, I’m humbled…I’m psyched! 🙂

If you read and you agree, I’d appreciate your vote for me here.

Either way, I’m excited and grateful and, as always, thank you for reading.
